Countdown to London 2012 Torch Relay
It's not long to go before the London Olympics is due to start.
While much of the action will be taking place at the Olympic Park, Lancaster City Council is working to ensure there are still plenty of opportunities to share the excitement and be part of the occasion locally.
On Friday June 22, the Olympic Torch Relay will be passing through the district - your once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the biggest show on earth. During its journey through our district the Torch will be passing through Carnforth, Bolton-le-Sands, Hest Bank, Morecambe and Lancaster.
Torch Relay Route
You can view the torch relay route on the map at the bottom of this page.
Details of the whole route are also available from the London 2012 website or you can download a map of the local route.
Start times for the Olympic Torch Relay through the Lancaster district are:
• Carnforth: 9.47am
• Bolton-le-Sands: 10.03am
• Hest Bank: 10.20am
• Morecambe: 10.36am
• Lancaster: 12.05pm
The city council is working with partners including Lancashire County Council, emergency services, schools and community groups to ensure a memorable day and one in which we can all take pride.
To allow the torch to pass safely through the district there will be some restrictions on local roads, as well as extra traffic due to the number of people who are expected to want to view the relay. More information is available on our traffic and travel page.
Lancaster City Council is particularly keen to see as many schools involved in the celebrations as possible and they can now access free learning resources linked to the Olympic Torch Relay through Get Set (www.london2012.com/getset), the official London 2012 education programme.
As an added bonus the city council will be organising the Velocity Festival - a celebration of sport in the Lancaster district - over the following weekend (June 23 and 24) and there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved with the Olympic spirit.
If you want to plan your own celebration for the Games, then why not sign up to become a Local Leader.
There are plenty of free tools to make your celebration one to remember, whether it’s a night in with friends to watch the Opening Ceremony or a community party with neighbours. Visit the Local Leaders page on www.london2012.com for details.
