Happy Mount Park

About The Park

Happy Mount Park was originally created in the 1920s as a traditional urban park area. It has had a varied history with many unusual attractions such as wild animals (with, believe it or not, a bear!), a boating waterway and various other attractions. Today attractions cater for the modern day family, whist still allowing parts of the park to capture the peace and tranquillity of a traditional park.

Green Flag Award

In 2007 Happy Mount Park was awarded a Green Flag Award after being judged by the Civic Trust to be welcoming, safe, well maintained and that it encouraged community involvement.  For further information about the Green Flag Award Scheme go to www.greenflagaward.org.uk

As well as these activities there are a number of gardens including a Japanese garden and traditional formal gardens to stroll through and enjoy.

The woodland walk appeals to the senses of smell and touch and attracts wildlife.

Signboards for birds and pondlife have been introduced and educational material will also be available to accompany these.

Access has been improved to allow easier wheelchair use.

Natural Play Consultation

Lancaster City Council will be holding a 'Natural Play drop in session' for children on Saturday June 6th 2009 from 2.00pm - 5.00pm. The purpose of the consultation is to find out what play activities children are interested in and help develop ideas for the natural play area due to be installed in the top area of the park.

So what is Natural Play?

Natural play is a term used to describe the kind of play that is able to make the most of the existing environment as a place for all kinds of activity from challenging adventurous play to experiential learning through exploration to social “hanging out”. These kinds of environments are primarily intended for 8 – 13 year olds but should also be a genuine social amenity for the whole family, a place for young people on their own or with their parents and/or carers.

The design of these kinds of play spaces begins with a close look at the existing assets of a site. We then develop these with further consultation to create a range of different opportunities appropriate to the place and relevant to the young people and the families who will use them.

So why not come along and have your say?! If you would like to see the poster, or if  your child would like to fill in a questionnaire they can be viewed and downloaded under the 'Download Column' on this webpage.
