The Butterfly House in Williamson Park re-opens on Saturday February 13

The Butterfly House in Williamson Park re-opens on Saturday February 13

Come along and walk amongst some of the world's most beautiful species, including brilliant swallowtails, and cleverly camouflaged owl butterflies within a natural habitat.

The pupae of new butterflies can be seen in a special display case and you may even see a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. In the stream that flows around the forest you may also spot a koi carp.

Tickets can be purchased from the shop and entry costs £4.50 for adults, £3.50 for children and students, £4 for concessions and £18 for a family ticket.

The Butterfly House is a popular destination for school trips and guided talks are available demonstrating the life cycle of the beautiful creatures. Bookings can be made by telephoning 01524 33318.

Local school children have been involved in a competition to create a new name for the zoo and have designed a flag for alongside the Butterfly House. The winners are:

Finn Kennedy, age 6 from Cathedral Primary School who came up with the name ‘Park Life’.

Jessica Macluskie, age 11 from Greatwood Primary School whose design for a new flag really impressed the judges.

They have won a VIP trip to the Butterfly House with their whole class before the grand opening event.

Chair of the Williamson Park board, Councillor Eileen Blamire said: “It is wonderful to have local children involved in reopening the Butterfly House and I’m sure they will enjoy being VIPs for the day. The Butterfly House has a host of new residents for people to come and meet and is one of Lancaster’s most beautiful attractions.”
