Adapting to Climate Change
Why adapt to climate change?

Morecambe coast sea surge
Climate change is real and it is happening all around us. Despite reducing our carbon emissions, climate change is inevitable for Lancaster district linked to the historical emissions of years gone by. Current UK predictions include;
• Increases in strong winds and gales
• Milder, wetter winters increasing the risk of flood
• More extreme weather events such as snow and freezing conditions
• Hotter, drier summers increasing the risk of drought
Using information and guidance provided by the UK Climate Impacts Programme we have successfully completed a Local Climate Impacts Profile (LCLIP), providing a summary of the effects so far of extreme weather on Lancaster district. The motivations for completing an LCLIP are to meet the criteria of National Indicator 188 Level 1, ‘Public Commitment and Impacts Assessment’, moving Lancaster district toward greater adaptation to climate change.
Lancaster District LCLIP
The Lancaster district LCLIP has helped us identify how extreme weather events affect services in the district, reducing the impacts for the future and making sure key council services can always be provided to those who need it. To help with the LCLIP, local media reports were collated, creating a Weather Event Timeline for the past 5 years. In addition a 50 year timeline was completed showing extreme events throughout recent history.
