Our commitment to walking and cycling
We are committed to developing safe, attractive routes for cyclists and pedestrians within the district for a variety of uses from commuting to shopping to leisure. Walking and cycling are low cost, healthy and sustainable modes of travel available to most people. We recognise the important role that these modes have to play in helping to create liveable towns and cities, in reducing social exclusion and promoting health improvement.
Improving walking and cycling routes is not just about providing opportunities for leisure and commuting but also helps to ensure safe and convenient access to health care, education and other local services. According to the 2001 Cenus almost three in ten households in the district do not have access to a car - ensuring that non-motorised road users have equal access to services is therefore vital.
Lancaster cycling demonstration town
Lancaster was one of the original six ‘cycling demonstration’ towns in the country, each receiving funding from the Department of Transport and Cycling England. The project ended in March 2011.
