Free Bookkeeping Courses

Free bookkeeping courses and one year's free accounts software subscription

Lancaster City Council is working with Lancaster & Morecambe College to offer FREE bookkeeping courses to SMEs and self-employed workers across the Lancaster District, funded by the Leading Lancashire project.

The European Social Fund has provided Leading Lancashire with some of the funding, to help develop effective behaviours in Accounting and Bookkeeping.

Participants must enrol onto all three courses to be eligible for the funding. These short courses are offered over three consecutive Friday mornings during
September and October 2021, and are due to be held in the LMC Business & Conference Centre.

Upon completion, Lancaster City Council will contribute up to £300 towards a maximum one-year subscription to a recognised accounting software package - for example Quickbooks or Xero - for micro businesses, social enterprises and charities based in the Lancaster district.


Introduction to Bookkeeping Part 1, 17/09/2021 • 9.30am-12pm

The course consists of the following units:

  • The accounting process and flow of information from book of prime entry like sales day book/purchase day book/cash book, to ledgers, to financial statements (profit & loss and balance sheet)
  • Why we need these financial statements - classification of elements: assets, liabilities, income, expense, capital – double effect
  • Essential accounting documents - invoices/purchase orders/credit notes/remittance advice/statement of accounts

Introduction to Bookkeeping Part 2, 24/09/2021 • 9.30am-12pm

The course consists of the following unit:

  • The “secret” behind debits and credits - manually recording key basic transaction in the general ledger 

Introduction to Xero, 01/10/2021 • 9.30am-12pm

The course consists of the following units:

  • How to ACCURATELY enter all transactions in an accounting software
  • How to carry out some basic accounting reconciliation (bank reconciliation)

Terms and conditions

  • All three sessions of the course must be completed to claim the grant to pay for the accounting software
  • The software must be for the business, not for individual employees of the business, and only one package will be awarded per business
  • The software funding is only available for SMEs or self-employed businesses registered in the Lancaster district
  • The accounting software must be pre-purchased for the year or up to a maximum of £300 to claim the grant. An invoice or proof of purchase is required for the claim form
  • There is no cash alternative
  • The funding which is being used to pay for the accounting software is a grant which is awarded through the UK law on subsidy control on the basis that, including this award, the business will not receive more than i) the equivalent of 325,000 Special Drawing Rights over any period of three fiscal years plus ii) a maximum of £1,600,000 in Covid-19 Business Grant Allowance plus iii) a maximum of £9,000,000 towards uncovered fixed costs in Covid-19 Business Grant Special Allowance. Grants under these allowances can be combined for a potential maximum allowance of £10,925,000 (subject to exchange rates). To claim the grant

The person who completed the course must apply for the grant on behalf of the business.
