Next chapter for Williamson Park café redevelopment begins

Plans for a new café at Williamson Park have taken an important step forward after Lancaster City Council's Cabinet approved the next stage of work on the project.

Alliance Leisure Services have now been appointed as a development partner to help progress plans for a permanent replacement of the Pavilion Café, which was demolished in 2025 following irreparable storm damage.

The proposed facility will replace the current temporary catering facilities, while enhancing visitor experience at one of Lancashire's most popular parks, which attracts more than 800,000 visits each year.

The latest decision allows detailed design work, technical studies and cost planning to be developed through RIBA design stages two to four before any final decision is made on construction.

Councillor Paul Hart, cabinet member with responsibility for Environmental Services, said: "For many people, a visit to Williamson Park isn't complete without stopping for a drink or a bite to eat. The Pavilion Café has been greatly missed, so we're pleased to be moving forward with plans for a new facility that meets the expectations of today's visitors while respecting the park's unique heritage."

"Home to the iconic Ashton Memorial, Butterfly House and Mini Zoo, Williamson Park is one of the district's greatest assets and attracts people from across the region.

"This work will provide the information needed to develop a robust proposal for the café and ensure any future investment delivers the greatest possible benefits for residents, visitors and the local economy."

The investment forms part of a wider ambition to improve visitor facilities, strengthen environmental resilience, increase accessibility and secure the long-term future of one of the district's best-loved destinations.

The project is also expected to strengthen Williamson Park's position as a leading visitor destination as the district prepares for future growth in tourism, including opportunities associated with Eden Project Morecambe.
