The Programme:

Join leading researchers from the Natural History Museum, the University of Glasgow and Lancaster University for a fascinating morning exploring the life, work and enduring legacy of Lancaster-born scientist Sir Richard Owen, the man who coined the term 'Dinosauria'.

10.00am - Leah George Demetriou - Natural History Museum, London Richard Owen's Dinosauria in Context: The Rhetoric, Politics and Legacy of the Dinosaurs

  • One of Richard Owen's most celebrated achievements was the creation of the term Dinosauria in 1842. Drawing together three extinct reptiles—Megalosaurus, Hylaeosaurus and Iguanodon—Owen did much more than introduce a new scientific name. This lecture explores how Owen used the concept of Dinosauria to advance both his scientific reputation and his vision for a National Museum of Natural History. It will also examine the continuing debates surrounding the definition and significance of Dinosauria, which remain active among palaeontologists today.

11.00am - Dr Jordan Kistler - University of GlasgowRichard Owen, Sea Serpent Killer: Establishing Authority in the Museum

  • Richard Owen was regularly called upon to investigate alleged sightings of sea serpents and other mysterious creatures. His sceptical approach earned him the nickname "Sea Serpent Killer", reportedly bestowed by Prince Albert himself. Dr Kistler will explore how Owen used these popular stories to establish scientific authority and strengthen the status of museums and their increasingly professional curators during the nineteenth century.

12.00 noon - Logan Winterwoods - Lancaster University - The Legacy of Sir Richard Owen in Modern Palaeontology

  • Although more than a century has passed since Owen's death, his influence continues to shape modern palaeontology. This lecture will examine how Owen's ideas and methods can still be detected in contemporary research and will highlight some of the latest developments within the discipline.
Guest Tickets £5 per person for the full set of 3 talks. Free to Friends.  BOOK ONLINE OR JOIN THE FRIENDS.
