Pest control treatments

Rodent control

Rats and mice carry a number of diseases and cause damage to properties.

The services we provide include:

  • A range of control methods including rodenticides and traps.
  • Investigation of the sources of infestation, e.g. we can carry out dye tests or smoke tests of drainage systems to identify defects
  • We can carry out drain camera surveys and provide you with a report and DVD, using our state-of-the-art equipment
  • Proofing of premises to prevent re-infestation
  • Sewer baiting throughout the district. Many rat infestations originate from sewer systems, and we attempt to keep the situation under control by routine baiting of manholes
  • FREE information and advice
  • We have powers available to us to require premises to be treated if the occupier is unwilling for whatever reason. Fortunately these powers are needed very rarely
  • Annual contracts for commercial premises for a set fee 'no hidden extras'

If you are considering treating rat or mouse infestations yourself, you will now only be able to purchase amateur products, and a maximum amount of 1.5KG.  These restrictions have been introduced primarily to protect wildlife.

It is strongly recommended that you use a competent qualified pest control service, such as Lancaster City Council, who will have access to professional use products and will follow the Wildlife Code,

Insect control

A number of insects e.g. cockroaches are known to carry diseases transmittable to humans, and biting or stinging insects create much distress and potentially can cause infection. Other species can damage and contaminate foodstuffs and furnishings.

We carry out treatments for the full range of common insects in any premises requesting the service. This includes fleas, beetles, wasps, ants, and many, many more. Domestic treatments for cockroaches are carried out FREE OF CHARGE, while other insects in domestic premises are treated for a set fee, regardless of the extent of the infestation.

Commercial premises are charged at a reasonable hourly rate for all insect treatments.

The service we provide includes:

  • Eradication of insects using a range of approved insecticides and equipment.
  • Supply and servicing of electrical flykillers, fly screening etc. FREE identification of any insect species.
  • Use of monitoring devices, e.g. flea and cockroach traps, to determine whether a problem exists.
  • FREE information and advice, e.g. how to proof premises to prevent re-infestation, or how to deal with such as woodlice, certain beetles, slugs and snails, where pesticides treatment is not appropriate.
  • Treatment of less common insect species such as Pharaoh’s Ants. It is always worth enquiring whether we provide the service you need.
  • We have powers available to us to treat filthy or verminous premises if the occupier is unwilling for whatever reason. Fortunately these powers are rarely necessary.
  • FREE ID of any insect species.

Bird control

Pigeons and starlings cause nuisance due to their droppings, which foul washing and buildings and may be a slipping hazard. Pigeons in particular are known to carry organisms such as salmonella, which can be transmitted to humans, and all birds carry fleas, mites and lice. Magpies and similar species can cause distress by their attacks on smaller birds

The service we provide includes:

  • Bird-scaring using a combination of noise, lights and physical disturbance
  • Bird-Proofing of premises using antiroosting spikes and netting etc to prevent landing
  • Requesting the public not to feed pigeons, in the form of letters to householders, and notices in public places

Control of other animals

The service we provide includes:

  • Squirrel control by cage trapping. We only deal with squirrels where they are causing a danger, eg in loft spaces where they may gnaw through electrical cables and cause fires
  • Control of foxes on the urban fringe using preventative measures, eg advising householders not to encourage foxes by leaving food out and ensuring refuse is properly stored
  • Mole control by trapping
  • We are continually expanding our services and may be able to assist with rabbits, moles and other pests
