Do I need permission?

Find out whether your home improvement or commercial project needs planning permission or building regulations approval

Renewable energy

The planning system is generally supportive of initiatives and technologies that generate clean, renewable energy and has produced guidance on a range of topics to assist the delivery of appropriate schemes.  This page sets out guidance on such matters.

Planning permission is required for the installation or erection of many renewable energy technologies, though this depends on location, scale and type.  However, some projects benefit from permitted development rights, such as those set out in Schedule 2 Part 14 of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 2015 for householders, blocks of flats, and for commercial and agricultural property.  Planning permission is still required if the property is listed or within a designated area (such as a conservation area). Further guidance is available within the National Planning Practice Guidance and the common projects section of the Planning Portal.
