Grey bins/orange sacks
Grey bins/orange sacks
We currently provide a fortnightly waste collection service for properties in the Lancaster District.
To guarantee a collection, your waste should be at the kerbside (or collection point) by 7am on your collection day.
We will only collect waste that is in the bin with the lid shut. We will not collect additional bags on top of or near the bin.
You can put most non-recyclable waste in your grey bin such as:
- Dirty, wet or greasy card or paper
- Hard plastics (you can recycle those marked 1, 2 or 5 in a triangle)
- Non-infectious absorbant waste (incontinence pads, nappies and sanitary products)
- Pet bedding, cat litter and animal faeces (please bag cat litter and animal faeces)
- Polystyrene packaging
- Porcelain and ceramics (wrap in newspaper or double bag if sharp)
- Tissues and tissue paper
- Wallpaper
- Wipes and used paper towel/napkins
We can't empty your grey bin if you put in:
- Bricks, rubble, bags of concrete, plasterboard, asbestos
- Construction waste (sand, paving slabs etc.)
- Car and motorbike parts, tyres
- Commercial, industrial or clinical waste
- Electrical items
- Garden waste
- Hazardous waste such as batteries, vapes, pesticides and so on
- Waste from house clearances
- What should I do if my bin is always too full?
If you have a very large household of permanent residents, a medical condition that generates excess waste, or children in nappies, you may qualify for an additional bin.
To assess whether you are eligible for this service, our waste officers will need to visit you at your property and complete a waste audit.
A service charge may apply.
To apply for an additional bin, you must complete our online form.
- What do I do if my waste has not been collected?
We apologise if we have been unable to collect your waste. The reason may be due to a vehicle breakdown, blocked roads or severe weather. In these cases, we will endeavour to return to your property as soon as possible.
If by 6pm we have not collected your waste, you should report it as missed, and we will aim to return for a collection within three working days. Please leave your bin or sack out until we collect it.
- Can I get assistance moving my bin to and from the collection point?
Our assisted bin collection service is designed to support residents who are unable to move their bins to the kerbside.
To be eligible, there must not be a family member, carer or anyone living at your property who can present your bin for collection and or return it to the property.
The quickest way to apply is by completing our online form, which is sent directly to the waste team.
